So I’m looking at getting a clover area seeded but have been behind the game this year- am I better off waiting to fall seed? I am tempted to plant something (corn or beans I suppose) and then fall seed clover- seemed like when I wanted to get it done it was to wet, and now we haven’t had a drop of rain in 3 1/2 weeks but talking rain Tuesday- and of course I’m on the road today…

100% fall seed. Clover is a cool season plant. You're in the tail end of the cool season and at the start of the warm season, I would not plant any cool season plant right now.

Shoot for mid-August and plant with a cereal grain. Can mix in annuals in like Crimson, Berseem into your perennial stand if you want to see some fall growth.

Like above says- fall is better. Now… if u have the time & space & want to try it…. Cannot hurt to try. Other than wasted time, seed, etc. The key: RAIN. That’s it. If you get good rains (& on decent soil) …. It’ll be just fine. If it rains & then shuts off for a month- no go. I remember a wet year on a new farm getting some established in JULY. If water stays coming… fine. That’s always a big IF.

Yesterday, 5/18, I broadcasted some clover seed. I know its late, but wanted to give it a try. Couple weeks ago I sprayed the areas with gly and 24d. Yesterday came back and burned them off and then raked them out a bit. Broadcasted clover. I know its late, but really wanted to try and get something done, especially with rain forecasted for last night, today and Tuesday.

Hopefully 3 or so days of rain and cooler temps this week will be in my favor. Looks like its supposed to rain again this weekend. Worst case it doesnt produce and I'll try a fall planting. At the very least I would think a little something would grow? And its plot areas are cleared off now and ready for a fall planting if need be.

Two plots, one is a a little open sliver in the timber thats maybe a tenth of an acre and then about a 1/4 acre that is in a field corner pocket.

Might just work if you are getting the heavy rain!

If that doesn’t work I’d load it down with buckwheat right before a rain. Might do that anyway as a place holder/weed suppressor. Heck dump a few pounds of cheap rape, pasja forage from Welters in too…. Some clover will make it and seed it again this fall.

I really like some Alsike clover in the mix in that situation if you are doing white clover, tolerates edge shade and ph a little more. Then hammer it hard around Labor Day with HEAVY rye grain and a smorgasbord of red, Alsike, ladino and whatever else. Hit it with cheap purple tops and rape. 400# per acre of the lime that is on sale right now at Blains. (I’d do that now if you can). I look at it that a its a small plot so a few extra pounds of $4 a pound seed from Welters isn’t going to break the bank…

Here is my timber plot. It gets better every year but I need to keep putting down lime. Finally getting the clover to look like something but its not there yet.

I will NEVER plant Imperial Whitetail clover again!.

Planted it about a year ago, it came up great and it looked fantastic all summer/ fall.
Now, it looks like crap. Very thin plot and weeds are taking over.
Will get some good Ladino seed and try broadcasting it in.

Hopefully the residuals of the 2-4D wont kill your clover when it sprouts. Depends how heavy of an application you applied to the plot.

That’s because most of imperial is berseem, an annual. Gone after a year. It’s a low cost seed that gives great first year growth. Great way for them to make big $ & cut back on perennials

I actually did just seed a tiny section of clover. I did some dirt work & had a 1/4 acre to patch up. I drilled clover & oats. Oats will hold it & jump up & be just fine. I think I put in berseem, crimson, balansa, Alice white, red & alsike. The buckwheat is another great idea too. I didn’t think of that one but will try that next time

This^ - Could even include some brassicas in the fall mix. Clover will be so thick and lush the following spring you'll be amazed

This is what that might look like. White clover will take things over but you can run brassaca seed and clover in the small seed box and cereal grain in the big box (or broadcast) at the same time and get a little bit of everything.
