I kinda like mowing rye NOW or a week ago. What worries me is any day now…. It’ll be fawn-city in the rye. If I do it now… I will walk it all before hand. Almost makes me sick to chop up a fawn. The reason I asked is I think I prematurely mowed my Rye![]()
Same.I will walk it all before hand.
Same.
The heads were not flowering yet is my concern, for termination.
I should be good then. THANK YOU!As long as rye has made it to the boot stage (grain head inside flag leaf), mowing should pretty well terminate it. Emergence (before pollinating) will also mow kill.
So I’m looking at getting a clover area seeded but have been behind the game this year- am I better off waiting to fall seed? I am tempted to plant something (corn or beans I suppose) and then fall seed clover- seemed like when I wanted to get it done it was to wet, and now we haven’t had a drop of rain in 3 1/2 weeks but talking rain Tuesday- and of course I’m on the road today…
Like above says- fall is better. Now… if u have the time & space & want to try it…. Cannot hurt to try. Other than wasted time, seed, etc. The key: RAIN. That’s it. If you get good rains (& on decent soil) …. It’ll be just fine. If it rains & then shuts off for a month- no go. I remember a wet year on a new farm getting some established in JULY. If water stays coming… fine. That’s always a big IF.So I’m looking at getting a clover area seeded but have been behind the game this year- am I better off waiting to fall seed? Hopefully the residuals of the 2-4D wont kill your clover when it sprouts. Depends how heavy of an application you applied to the plot.Yesterday, 5/18, I broadcasted some clover seed. I know its late, but wanted to give it a try. Couple weeks ago I sprayed the areas with gly and 24d. Yesterday came back and burned them off and then raked them out a bit. Broadcasted clover. I know its late, but really wanted to try and get something done, especially with rain forecasted for last night, today and Tuesday.
Hopefully 3 or so days of rain and cooler temps this week will be in my favor. Looks like its supposed to rain again this weekend. Worst case it doesnt produce and I'll try a fall planting. At the very least I would think a little something would grow? And its plot areas are cleared off now and ready for a fall planting if need be.
Two plots, one is a a little open sliver in the timber thats maybe a tenth of an acre and then about a 1/4 acre that is in a field corner pocket.

That’s because most of imperial is berseem, an annual. Gone after a year. It’s a low cost seed that gives great first year growth. Great way for them to make big $ & cut back on perennialsI will NEVER plant Imperial Whitetail clover again!.
Planted it about a year ago, it came up great and it looked fantastic all summer/ fall.
Now, it looks like crap. Very thin plot and weeds are taking over.
Will get some good Ladino seed and try broadcasting it in.
This^ - Could even include some brassicas in the fall mix. Clover will be so thick and lush the following spring you'll be amazed100% fall seed. Clover is a cool season plant. You're in the tail end of the cool season and at the start of the warm season, I would not plant any cool season plant right now.
Shoot for mid-August and plant with a cereal grain. Can mix in annuals in like Crimson, Berseem into your perennial stand if you want to see some fall growth.
