Re: Opinions on Trails
I think trails are a great thing. The property I hunt has several mowed trails through the timber and the deer use them religously. There isn't a lot of pressure during the rest of the year on these trails...some camping and fishing access on weekends and a pass with...
Starting last summer I began compiling a list that I keep in my truck during hunting season. The list has all kinds of stuff on it, the most important being emergency contact information for the spots that I hunt. I think this is a really important thing to bring up, as it can be overlooked...
I happened to shoot one of the new Parker bows last week and was very, very impressed. I love my Hoyt, but when I think about "bang for the buck" it's going to be hard to rule out a Parker next time.
Otherwise known as Lake LeMud. It was once a nice lake...but not taken care of and by the end of the 90's had silted in very badly.
The owners put it on the market and were able to unload it on some real estate company from out of state.
I don't know how much work/dredging they've done since...
I've bought a lot of digicams over the past few years as a part of my job.
Hands down the best units are Sony's.
Have had bad luck with Fuji.
Olympus makes a decent one...on the high end of their product line.
If you're going to be hauling this around in your pocket a lot the biggest issue...
The Coleman Crawdad is pretty cool. Here is a link. I used one of these during bow season a few years ago to scoot back and forth over a river to some nearly impossible to access public ground. Now I've got an 8' aluminum job that is even better suited.
Anyhow, here is a link. They're very...
I shot birds my first 3 seasons. I've gone 3 in a row now without putting one down. I think this hunting comes down to plain old dumb luck sometimes...and outfoxing the other guys trying to kill birds in the same neighborhood. Don't quit, it's a rush when you get your first one.
These guys are right on. Birds will work their way towards their roosting site during the early evening. The flocks I hunt tend to roost in the same place every evening.
It's a lot easier to go to a property you intend to hunt and listen for gobbling in the morning. Return late in the day and...
I just returned from a short ride around my local hotspots. Saw 2 toms strutting around like crazy in different spots. Hens are just thick as can be. I wish we had a season that caught a weekend during the last week or March/first week of April!
Re: Lost Labs!!!!
I hope you find them. I know that area pretty well, I actually know a few of your neighbors. My folks live about 10 miles from you as the crow flies...I'll tell them to keep an eye out on their way to and from work.
Scout, scout, scout. If you're hunting public land or pressured birds scout a little more. Know the morning and evening routines of the flock you're hunting and then get yourself set up on Day 1 to intercept a gobbler coming off the roost or going to it.
I haven't taken decoys into the field...
The ~$30 Carlson's from Cabela's throws a great pattern out of my 870. I started using Hevishot #5's last season but the cheapo Winchester #4's also shot real well.
I read this topic here on IW the other day and had a chance to visit Houston's website last night. He has his own forums and is getting absolutely roasted by the folks posting there. And rightfully so.
There are probably a lot of outdoor "celebrities" shaking like a dog crapping razor blades...
I happened into Delaware county last week during a drive and couldn't believe some of the land up there. There is a little stretch of road between Monticello and Hwy. 20 that looked like paradise. Hilly with lots of oak ridges and creek drainages all full of timber.
Firedog, that wasn't meant as a slam. But your situation is exactly what I'm talking about. You left for a better life than what you could have had as an Iowa resident. I'm not holding that against you because "life" takes precedence over hunting. But you can't expect to have your cake and...
A few thoughts...
Supply and demand is the driving force. The tag costs will (and should) increase when so many are wanting to hunt here.
Some are saying that the doe tags for NR's should be given for free along with an any sex tag. Hmm....if that were to happen then I want a free doe tag...
The spikes were at least 2.5 already...I think 1 was 3.5. I used to think the same thing about shooting spikes: they're going to grow up so don't shoot them. I read an article a few years back in North American Whitetail on shooting spikes or letting them walk; the gist of it said that a spike...
My group of 11 in east central IA killed 11 deer first season. 2 bucks (spikes), 7 does and 2 button bucks. I hated to see the little button bucks get shot.
