Acorns to Oaks!

Experiment.

Planting 400 shingle oaks in clusters. Not protecting.

Will see if they survive.

When should I expect to see growth from fall planted acorns? Did about 1.5 acres of tilling and broadcasting acorns. Didn’t rain for a long time after so I am worried they dried out.

Also planted a couple hundred DCO’s by drilling a hole and dropping in the hole.

Anxious to see if any make it but no idea when I should expect to know.

Very cool - doing something similar next week! Where did you get them?

They're a very hardy oak for browse. I've killed more than 400 on my place and need to do a whole bunch more.

If you all want any acorns this fall, I'll see if they're producing this year on the farm....or come down and pick your own if you want.

I get it. Considered scrub tree by most.

Why planted. None on my farm. I love that they hold their leaves thru winter.

I plan to manage them like a shrub strictly for cover. I'll mulch them down as necessary as they resprout like crazy

I've been tinkering with different pots the last few years for starting trees and am probably overcomplicating it - but what have you all found as the best size and type (plastic, grow bag etc. ) for starting and keeping young oaks through the winter to plant at 2 yo or even 3yo ???

I find a 5 gal plastic pot just leaves you with circled up tap root. Bagging a few this year to see, seems like they should air prune and eliminate any tap root issues. Just trying to learn those of you experienced and grow them the best I possibly can!

Is the bottom of your bin a screen or all one plastic mold with holes in it?

Experimenting with this years fridge germ'd chestnuts. Some Burr and Swamp White as well. Started several inside, individual in both 5 gal and 2 gal grow bags, and the rest in community pots for the summer.

In the same boat, not sure if I should break up and pot them or let em ride. Maybe fall plant a few of those and carry the rest through winter. Not sure what's best

How do you guys carry potted trees through the winter if you do not plant them at their final location during the fall? I have some burr oaks I started from acorns this spring, I plan on planting most of them this fall but I’d like to have a backup plan if I am unable to get them all planted in the ground. Some of them are in prime hunting spots on a small property that I’d rather not disturb during the fall too if I can avoid it.

On a similar note, how do you handle DCO acorns when you get them in the fall if you are unable to direct plant them that fall? I tried storing some in the fridge over winter but did not have the best of luck on them sprouting this spring. Looking to improve that process this coming year. I’ve seen guys bury rootmaker trays and protect them as best they can from rodents, wasn’t sure if that was the most popular method or not.

Even with efforts carrying over chestnuts seems to be a fruitless endeavor. Most die on me. Oaks carry over much easier.
