Switchgrass

I drilled some RC about 2 weeks ago and have a bad flush of annual grass, not sure if I have any switch coming. Just keep it clipped is my only option? Have some Duracor on hand for the broadleafs if they come
 
Possibly switch? This could be where I filled my spreader and spilled some. There is also a knob where I turned with my sprayer and the missed spots look like switch coming in. It is becoming apparent that I did something wrong with my chemical. Another hillside where I did everything by hand looks to have a quite a bit coming in. Pretty big too. I planted it earlier as I was never going to be able to get the drill in there. I have Duracor arriving today. It is thick with some sort of pigweed and I need to get on top of it.

Not sure.. looks like some crabgrass or other CSGs.

Can you take a closer pic at some of the more vertical / erect grasses? The red bases and faint center pin stripe typically give them away.

Look closely and take some photos. Post up here, we can help identify.

That is definitely not switchgrass.
 
I broadcasted RC on April 19th, sprayed with atrazine after cultipacking. Next day received 3" of rain. Now half the field looks great but the other half appears to be taken over by foxtail. Should I just mow it or is there something I can spray the foxtail that won't harm the switchgrass? Thanks

Quinclorac will take out the foxtail.

I spray a 18% variety called Quintessential. 64 ounces to the acre with 24 oz per acre MSO (REQUIRED)
 
Switch? Been reading back and I think it is. If so, whatever I messed up seems to have delayed it more than killed it. I have a quite a bit of this coming in around my planting. It’s not a total success, but not a total failure if this is switch.

Lot of switch is coming up now. When I planted non-rc big rock types…, heck, well into July it would be popping up. Switch, of any type starts so tiny & u still need to be patient. All the sudden- Pow! U got a lot more plants than u realized.

Not sure on the first photo.. May not be.

The second one definitely is. Trademark red bases, pinstripe in center of leaf.. Also see its tillering.. must be a happy seedling :)

Planted 6 acres of RC Bigrock in early June. I had sprayed 2qts gly & 1 pint/acre 2,4-D two weeks prior to broadcasting. Checked on it two days ago. I could not positively ID any switch, although it’s very possible there was some up. It was a bit concerning that many areas appeared to have no germination whatsoever in rather large areas. I decided to mow the whole 6 acres down to approx 5”. I quite possibly damaged or killed some switch but I felt I had no choice because the foxtail was 12-18” tall and THICK in many areas.

I really regret skipping the atrazine step this year. Last year I did everything almost identically except I also put down an application of atrazine. Last years planting was 4-6’ tall by the end of August. This year much of that planting is 6’ already.

Here’s my question for those of you with more experience than I on switchgrass.

Here in SC Iowa we’ve had optimal moisture for growing. Considering I planted the switch ~ 4 weeks ago and today I mowed the whole 6 acres to 5”…Was the switch up more than I realized and now I’ve damaged/killed it? Man…the foxtail was BADDD thick.

Right now I’m planning on spraying quinclorac 2,4-D in a couple weeks to hopefully smoke the foxtail and broadleafs and release the switch.

Thoughts?

If it got too choked out for too long - it could have killed it. Same with mowing it and having thatch smother it.
The reality…. There’s probably some there. My GUESS. Takes a tall thick stand to kill it. Hopefully the mowing didn’t leave a thick mat on top. Spray away and hope you got some coming in. U will know in a month or 2 if u got switch or not. Worst case- redo next season. Hopefully not.

I don't think the atrazine would have helped against the foxtail. It seems to help the foxtail for me, removes the competition.
