Brassicas

Crazy how much brassicas have greened up and actually grown in last 2-3 weeks once we started getting rain again. Didn't know it was even possible. Have never seen anything like it.

These were very small, shriveled, tiny or no bulbs.

Now, green, lush, and bulbs.

Way past normal grow window.

We had a .6 acre brassica plot last year that has been taken over by thistles this spring. We have gly and 2-4,d on hand. Will either of those or a mixture of both kill them?

I am fighting canada thistles big time on my farm as well. I use a mixture of 2,4-D and gly and it does smoke them. Problem is the seedbank, I kill them off but they keep coming. Hopefully eventually I will get them all killed and seedbank will be depleted. Get them soon before they bloom and go to seed!

Same here in mid MO. I rebroadcasted in early October and I have radish galore in my plot. All decent size too..

Who is taking advantage of the moisture and getting their fall plots planted now before the August heat and drought?

Obviously its a bit early, but I'm contemplating it. Anyone else?

I thought I was brilliant in doing that last year. Planted right around July 15th. Nice rains came and they shot up fast. By September 1st they were looking phenomenal, lush, green, all of it. Fast forward to October 1st and 80% of that green was ate. Fast forward to Nov 1 and it was almost entirely all gone. Was not ideal. This year i am going to plant later in hopes they don't devour it come September, not sure it will matter though...

The right answer (for me) would probably be to fence it off. Not sure I want to go through all that effort though. Might just keep in clover & chicory as it is now (which is looking real nice). There's one thing for sure though, anyone who says deer don't eat brassicas much until a frost is completely wrong and full of sh*t

Too early. Just asking for issues imo. We’ll get rain, don’t plant until we’ve got it. I’ve planted turnips into the middle of September and had great plots.

Brassicas are kinda like “corn”…. Once they eaten - you’re done. If you plant “too small” - be over fast. For sure need “good size plots” vs what might be big enough for a clover plot for example. Like in my case- I can do 1/4 acre clover & it’s fine. But- I better have 1-2 acres of brassicas or they will get murdered.
On timing- I personally think now is fine - it’ll still come down to plot size. Bulbs will clearly be bigger if plant now - which some like, some don’t. Totally agree that even a month later- can be successful. I’ve for sure had some plots get ravaged though & bigger is better if able

The word " Brassicas" has gotten way too watered down over the years.
Radishes n turnips are considered " brassicas " but if planted at the same time, the radishes will get POUNDED long before the turnips.

NEIA here. And seeded some of my purple tops turnips and radishes today. Sprayed it down and scattered them. My pumpkins are struggling due to I haven't been able to care for them till now. Put a bucket over them and sprayed big circles around them. Hopefully they both do well. I always plant my brassicas mid July right before a rain. (But I don't have much browse pressure either) My food plots don't get hammered until fall. So I don't worry about browse pressure.
Clover
Radishes
Purple top turnips
Pumpkins
Standing corn
Should be a good destination this fall.

Dbltree used to suggest planting brassicas in late July or early August. Of course he watched the weather.
I’ve done fine planting the first week or ten days in August. Naturally it helps to avoid 6 weeks without a rain after planting.

Trapshooter. What varieties of pumpkins did you plant?

I frett over them every year (this year included) but I've learned, once they take off, they can really GOOOO....
as long as they get moisture.

Mine looked dismal 2 weeks ago, now they look incredible.

Got my Turnip/ Rape plots sprayed. Am gonna bump it up a week and try for August 1st. (Normally July 25th).
Radishes I may wait a bit longer. Will watch the rain Forcast and hope to hit a good rain event.
